The first two questions were easy. For the third, there are no easy answers jumping out at me. Each situation requires careful consideration.

I know that being part of the SCA has given me good friends, many of whom have become part of my family. There is much I have to offer the SCA in the way of experience and, according to a dear friend, tenacity.

I want to be able to enjoy myself, give freely of the time I have available, and continue to learn. So, that answers my last question. The SCA might not be first on my priorities at this point in my life, but it is near the top. The time that I'm not committed to family and work will certainly continue to be filled by the Soceity and my friends there.

Rosewinter-rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10855485041215119481noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9003864140434005556.post-9762281817429395932012-05-08T16:54:00.000-04:002012-05-08T16:54:44.284-04:00SCA-desires, wants, and priorities (part 2)A quick recap...in the last post, I had called for us "old-times" to ask ourselves the questions I ask of newcomers. What it is that we think of when we bring to mind the Middle Ages, what it is we want from the Society for Creative Anachronism, and where the SCA lies in our priorities.

When I think of the Middle Ages, I still picture castles and knights and ladies wearing pointy hats, that I now know are called hennins. I think of cathedrals and abbeys, fields of grain and fields for tourneys. And under it all is still a little of old Hollywood with Camelot and Danny Kaye and Errol Flynn.

For what I want from the SCA? That's a harder question. I want to feel that initial awe I felt at that first event. To breathe in the experience. How amazing is it that these people pull together to create a taste of the Middle Ages and Renaissance? I want to make sure I go to events and be the persona so many people helped me to develop over the years. Lady Elizabeth is a delightful flirt, a hardworking laborer who sets up and clears away decorations for the tournament, a cook that wants to make sure the people are well fed and enjoyed the food, an artisan who might not be a major talent but is willing to share what she knows in hopes that those gentles she taught will go on to out stripe her abilities. I want to improve the skills I have and continue to dabble in new experiences.

But where to find the time and what to focus on? Unlike that time back in college when we had weekly gatherings to plan and hold workshops and nearly daily fencing practices, I am responsible for more than just getting to class and getting good grades. I have a full time job and since marrying, two families that live 60 miles apart. How do I balance the commitment to the SCA with my modern responsibilities. How do you decide which is more important....a business meeting or your husband's grandfather's 85th birthday party that was planned at the last minute so he wouldn't raise a fuss about a fuss being raised over him? Which is more important to a parent, fighter practice or their child's school play? You have a bad cold but committed to teaching a workshop? You are supposed to help out with court, but your company is behind on filling orders or got a new account that needs immediate attention?

winter-rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10855485041215119481noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9003864140434005556.post-16247842519632051562012-05-07T18:26:00.002-04:002012-05-07T18:27:02.394-04:00SCA-desires, wants, and priorities (two parts)

I would challenge those who have been in the SCA for more than five year, twenty years or even facing a golden anniversary of participation to aks ourselves those questions once more. What do I want from the SCA and where does the SCA sit on the list of my life's priorities.

Frequently, when meeting newcomers to the SCA, I ask them to describe their picture of the Middle Ages and what they hope to "get out of" and expierence in the SCA. The viewpoints are varied, but all have carried a common theme. The romanticism of Chivalric Ideal. Bright banners and horns calling to announce the arrival or Royalty or to signal the start of battles. Food of great variety to temp the palate. The question, "What do you want from the SCA," is so much harder to answer. Are you here to learn, to find frienship or even romance, recognition of your skills, to "live the dream," or some combination of it all.

Another question we should ask them is, "How involved do you want to be?" This hobby of ours has the potential to become all consuming if we let it. Should we be looking at newcomers and assuming they want to dive in and hold offices and help run events, or should we instead be giving them time to discover the SCA at their own pace.

I asked myself why I joined the SCA in the first place. The answer was easy. I loved fairy tales and gowns and movies with castles and princesses.

My first exposure to the SCA was a demo on my college campus. I didn't get to go to the demo because of classes, but I heard there were people wearing amour and beatiful clothes, they danced and fought and sang! I wanted to know more. The next year I met this boy with beautiful eyes and we started dating. He belonged to that group. I fell in love...with the boy with the beautiful eyes and the SCA. I wanted to do everything! Okay, except the heavy armoured combat. My first event was over in the Barony Marche of Debatable Lands...I think the theme was Eros vs. Agape, the different kinds of love. It was a fairy tale day of fighting, feasting, and theater with dinner. I was introduced to ladies working needlepoint and knitting, met knights and great fencers, and had brandied pears.

I've been a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) for over two decades. In that time, I've have held the offices of Herald, Seneschal, and A&S officer. I have been a fencer, autocrat, feast-o-crat, and seamstress. I have dabbled in calligraphy, illumination, tablet weaving, knitting, fingerloop braiding, brewing and more. Recognition and awards have come my way over the years, too. It's a wonderful feeling when your peer acknowledge the work you've been doing, but mostly a simple, "Thanks!" warms my heart the most.

But were do I go from here?

Surely there are those among us who've been labeled a bag of wind, blatherskite, boaster, gasbag, know-it-all or hotshot? What about a bandit, kleptomaniac, pilferer, porch climber, spider or swindler? If you, or someone you know, fall into these categories, we request that you attend our annual Spring Thing event hosted by the Canton of Westland Mor on June 2, 2012. We will build our thieves den at Twin Lakes Park; no street address, Pavilion #5, in Greensburg, Pa 15601. Or, show-off your skills with axes and knives at our thrown weapons range. But, don't be too much of a windbag, or you might miss out on our brewing competition. This year's theme? Tea! Beg, borrow or steal your best mix of teas and show them off to our contemptible crew of judges. Keep a close eye on your secret recipe, however, or it might just walk off in someone's pocket!
A boastful day board and feast will be prepared by our Feastocrat THLady Caitilin and her hijacking helpers Lady Rosheen and Lord Gunther. <div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
If it please you, I should happily share these words from a favored play:

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
A Midsummer-Night's Dream by William Shakespeare

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Act V, Scene I

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Puck:

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
If we shadows have offended,

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Think but this, (and all is mended,)

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
That you have but slumber'd here

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
While these visions did appear.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
And this weak and idle theme,

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
No more yeilding but a dream,

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Gentles, do not reprehend ;

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
If you pardon, we will mend.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
And, as I am an honest Puck,

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
If we have unearned luck

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Now to 'scape the serpent's tongue,

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
We will make amends ere long :

Else the Puck a liar call,

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
So, good night unto you all !

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Give me your hands, if we be friends,

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
And Robin shall restore amends.

[Exit.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

"A Literary Moment... " is something new that I would like to add to our blog. Literature plays an important role in society and has done so from the first words penned to paper and the first story orally passed along. It is through stories that we often best express and share our ideas and beliefs. Literature has the power to inspire... the power to expand our minds... the power to move us... the power to free us. Through literature we can learn compassion and chivalry. And sometimes, should we be quite fortunate, literature can simply make us smile and laugh! As hopefully the quote above does for those familiar with the antics that take place within A Midsummer-Night's Dream.

These three words are tiny but together they evoke a spirit of family,
strength born of adversity, courage to be not afraid, and a joy of life,
the likes of which are found nowhere else in the Known World. These
tiny words bind us together tighter than any rope.
We are BOG, the family, and the friend; the Barony, the Canton, and the People.
WE are Bog! Called out in unison to be heard across the field of battle and our foes quake in fear.
We ARE Bog, The song in every raven's heart as battle is joined and let no foe go undefeated
WE ARE BOG! Let all know, together we are invincible, undivided, we are passionate, and we are strong.
To you, Our champions, We say, "We are Bog".
As you represent the Barony, remember who we are.
When you stand for us remember what we symbolize.
WE ARE BOG! Be proud of what you have done this day.

The handbook has been given a complete overhaul from the last edition. The cover is shiny and a quick flip through showed detailed illustrations for drafting garb patterns and actual pictures of different fighting stances. A closer look reveals careful organization and thought.

The new cartoons are cute, but I really miss the old ones. You know you've been in the SCA a long time if you hear "Carthagenian war elephant" and automatically respond "needs more duct tape."

The costuming section is very detailed. There are a number of different illustrations for making the trusty t-tunic and circle cloaks. The editors also included directions on how to make different styles of neckline (and how to finish those) as well as viking dresses and Irish style dresses. One of the best features is the section on how to take your measurements to ensure a proper fit. Attention was even paid to head wear in this edition.

The other chapters with lots of great new info is armouring, fight preparation, and chivalric arts. Descriptions of how to get started include not just concepts like "buy ye some armor and go to fighter practice," but better recommendations like "The one thing you don't want to do is buy armor without trying it on first" and "Your helm is your best friend...PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, do not skimp here." There are directions on how to make a gorget, demi-gauntlets, lamellar, shields of different shapes, and more. The chivalric arts section describes techniques and includes pictures of a gentle taking different stances and follow through positions.

What I found lacking is the arts & sciences chapter. There first five pages are dedicated to research, documentation, and why you should want to enter your creations into competitions and exhibitions. You even find out about how work is judged and how to get involved in judging. There isn't much to inspire creativity. A couple pages on dance are provided. Other activities are skimmed over in just a few paragraphs like singing, poetry, storytelling, music and jest. There are directions for a couple games. The descriptions are dry and there aren't any instructions to get started in any of the crafts.

Those types of articles have apparently been replaced with brief descriptions of "additional past times" in that new chapter. I was reminded that we have activities like hound coursing, equestrian games,and jousting. Thrown weapons and archery are given attention in this edition of the handbook.

The SCA does need to promote the educational opportunities available to us. However, I would have preferred to be given projects that don't need much guidance to get excited about learning, instead of the somewhat daunting need to get involved in displaying my work that I don't know how to do yet. Overall, the new Known World Handbook does what it needs to do for newcomers. The history, descriptions of clothing and chivalry give a wonderful glimpse into the dream.

It's time for PENNSIC!

Most years, I have a routine for Pennsic. Go to some classes, watch at least one battle, head up to the Barony's main campsite for Gobi night, and relax. There's nothing wrong with having a routine...but...

This year, I'm going to make an effort to do things I've never done before at Pennsic. There are lots of gentles each year who put in a thought, effort, and time to create entertainment for us to enjoy.

Each day there are dance classes that focus on learning the steps to the specific dances planned for the balls during the week.

Artisans' Row has expanced:

"A place to craft… A place to learn… A place to share…
Artisans Rows have been growing steadily over the past half-dozen years at SCA events. An Artisans Row is usually a collection of workshop areas where artisans & scholars can demonstrate, share, and teach – preferably hands-on – their particular skills & knowledge.
At Pennsic, Artisans Row is set up a little differently. We have three tents in the Pennsic University area (A&S Tents #4, #5 and #6), and each tent is dedicated to a topic for the whole day. Artisans are welcome to take part in informal one-on one instruction, open workshop times, joint artisan/area projects, sharing, networking, and night classes. "

There will be plays to go see. "The Performing Arts Tent is at the corner of Kurdson Way and Chandler's Road, with complete facilities for performers, including a stage, lighting, and a small backstage area."

There is a classroom set aside for learning the games that were played in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, too. Wouldn't it be great to learn some board and card games to have a gaming tournament at 12th Night???

And the music...The Knowne World Choir and Debatable Choirs are going to perform at the performing arts tent. There are always wandering minstrels in the merchant area...and the lady with the hurdy gurdy.

Pennsic has the makings of being a great vacation this year!winter-rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10855485041215119481noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9003864140434005556.post-28241664090043385172011-06-02T01:25:00.000-04:002011-06-02T01:25:02.442-04:00Spring Thing: Men in Kilts... Members are able to participate in various marshal activities, as well as a myriad of Arts and Science displays and competitions. At many events there are classes offered on a variety of Medieval aspects from food to making your own garb. In amongst all of this is something called Heraldry.

Heralds are generally recognized by their voices. They can be heard all around an event's site calling out announcements or activities about to take place. In Royal and Baronial Courts, it is the Herald's voice that you will hear calling forth individuals, reading scrolls and leading the "vivats!" (Vivat! is a medieval way of saying hurray.)

Another equally important aspect of Heraldry is assisting members of the SCA with the development of a persona - who you would have been had you existed in the real Middle Ages. Heralds help you with the creation of a device and name. Simply put, your device is a pictorial representation of you. Your name is how you will be known to other members.

Picking a name can seem like a tedious task, but it can actually be a lot of fun.

Like trying on new garb, it can be exciting to try on a new name. However, the method used to find that name varies. Some individuals pick a land from which they would like to be from or a culture they would enjoy belonging to or even a profession (e.g., Baker, Smith), and allow the name to develop from there. Others may pick a century from which they have a particular interest, then randomly pick a name they like. Still others will climb around on their family trees for the name of a distant relative who actually lived in the Middle Ages.

All of these are excellent methods to use in picking a name, albeit some are easier to work with than others. On constant though is that all names (and devices) must meet with the approval of the College of Heralds. Their primary function is not to make your life challenging, but to 1. Make sure the name is period and 2. Make sure that no one else in your immediate area or Kingdom has already registered the identical name. If all goes your way, then within a few months you will have a brand new SCA-friendly name.

However, there is one aspect in choosing a name that is far more important than the method you use to find it, and it needs to be considered before you submit your name for approval. While the above methods are excellent ways to find a name, none of them can ensure that you will respond to that name. I encourage you to try the name on like that new garb, and make sure that it fits. Not all names come tailor made. Involve your friends. If you are selecting a name in a language unknown to you, then ask someone to help you pronounce it - what might look beautiful on paper, may not be agreeable to the ear.

When we were babies, someone chose a name for us. While some were lucky enough to like their name, this was not always the case. Now you have a choice. The power to select a name is in your hands, use it wisely. And remember you are not alone, somewhere there is a herald eager to match you with the perfect medieval name!dragonwriterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12715131525543931315noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9003864140434005556.post-34236765898866222042011-05-01T08:37:00.002-04:002011-05-01T08:44:52.779-04:00Are you in a play?Most people aren't brave enough to come right over and asked why I'm dressed funny, but I have been lucky enough to be asked, "Are you in a play?"

My reply, "I'm not in a play. I'm part of living history."

"Like the Civil War reenactors?"

"Yep. Kinda like that, but instead of reenacting specific events, we learn about then recreate the skills and activities in the daily lives of medieval people."

It always makes me smile. And sometimes...Just once in awhile...They ask for more information and the "Dream" grows.

Rosewinter-rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10855485041215119481noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9003864140434005556.post-67940927889707432032011-04-01T21:23:00.007-04:002011-04-02T00:30:41.672-04:00Are you in a play?If someone were to poll members of the SCA, I wonder what the top five questions asked by non-sca observes would be? To the unfamiliar eye, we must look rather interesting... fascinating, even.

When still new to the group, I was warned to expect the "Are you in a play?" question often. Sadly, I have never been asked this question, but I know people who have been. You know what I say? Bravo to those unsuspecting individuals with the guts to approach and ask why a person might be sporting fashionable Medieval garb! This might be a person worthy of recruiting. So, with that thought in mind, be sure to make your answers good!

So, what questions has wearing your garb in non-sca environments (such as: Giant Eagle, WalMart, Sheetz, etc.) inspired?

dragonwriterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12715131525543931315noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9003864140434005556.post-89263702143182558942011-02-05T18:00:00.001-05:002011-04-01T21:27:08.950-04:00Spring is a-comingOk, so you look out your window and all you see is snow and ice. Spring seems a distant promise or a vague memory from the past. Yet, as Lady Elizabeth Thorne put it, the traditional consultation with Phil the Groundhog has taken place and a prediction of an early spring has been pronounced. What does this have to do with us and the SCA? With the coming of Spring comes the planning for more events, especially events that will take place out of doors and that may involve camping. Here is what Lady Elizabeth had to say about getting ready for Spring:

Take a few minutes in the coming days to check your garb, armor, weapons, and camping equipment.

What kind of shape is it in? Do you need to replace those pesky tent poles? Would it hurt to pick up a small canister or two of propane so you have enough to run your stove and lantern at Pennsic without it killing your budget just before you leave.

Make a list of what you took last time. Make a list of what you desperately thought you needed that you forgot. Think carefully about what you took that you did not need and take that off the list.

Those who are newer...questions?

Those who are old hand at this...memories, recommendations??

War Practice, Spring Thing, 3-Day and Pennsic, as well as a score of other wonderful events, are all right around the corner. May your enthusiasm to pack your vehicle and venture off inspire you to heed our advice and begin checking your supplies now rather than waiting 'til the night before the event. After all, who wants to get to War Practice only to find out that they forgot to pack their air mattress? Or, that they will be needed to help with court, only to discover that the only reasonable outfit packed has a horrible, glaring hole! This later scenario, however, can be a good excuse to purchase new garb.

So, take a little time each day to evaluate your supplies. We hope you will go forth prepared and able to focus on the fun times and memories you will soon create!

Happy Adventuring!

The weather cooperated as best it could. In other words, it was so cold that not even the snow would dare to fall. But it was beautiful none the less. For from within the warmth of a building full of medieval character, we could admire a gentle world that displayed for us her best snowy white dress beaded with glittering ice.

What happened within the friendly hall and rooms of the building? All who gathered shared smiles and conversation. They laughed or spoke seriously of matters most important within the Knowne World. They exchanged stories, listened to music, admired scroll work, and feasted heartily. New friendships were made; and old friendships were rekindled. Small children delighted us old folks with their vigor and bravery. Tears of joy were shed as good friends received high honors from Their Majesties and Their Excellencies. Embraces were made and plans were set... until next we should meet.

And this was our Twelfth Night. I ask you, what more could one expect from an event?dragonwriterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12715131525543931315noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9003864140434005556.post-86466173431319459492011-01-27T00:33:00.004-05:002011-01-27T00:38:48.916-05:00Welcome To Our New BlogWelcome Everyone!

We all grow older and wiser as we continue to age. Why should not our Blog do the same? Therefore, our Blog has shed its old garb - though it served us well - and taken up a new look. The material is still of good quality (or so I hope), but the stitching will be new and strong and, with good fortune, there will be some pretty new trim to snazzy it up a bit.

So I invite you to pull up a chair, grab your favorite mug or goblet, put on your comfy garb, and sit back and relax. You are among friends. Let us explore the SCA together and see what we find.
To all of you who are authors on this blog, please share your (family-friendly) stories. Or even your favorite photograph or two.

Speaking of photography, many of us try our darndest to be photographers... and often we manage to capture a really good photo of a battle or friends. However, there is a gentleman who walks among us in the SCA capturing some extraordinary images! While the Pennsic 37 photos are not posted yet (geez, give the guy a break... he's probably still unpacking), there are plenty of other photos to be found from past events - and some of our vary own Boggers! There are two really nice pictures of Mistress Cynthia in among those taken at the Siege of Harlech Castle I.

Check them out for yourself: http://www.pbase.com/darter02/sca

Take care!
Caitilindragonwriterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12715131525543931315noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9003864140434005556.post-89305414909786429072008-07-27T23:16:00.008-04:002008-07-28T00:15:09.456-04:00Pennsic War 37 is under way!

Ever wonder what Pennsic looks like to all those people traveling North and South on Rte 79? This weekend is the Baronial Championship Event and Demo at the Galleria Mall in Johnstown. If you're reading this post and wondering who or what we are, this event is a great opportunity for you to have your questions answered. If you're a member already, then we hope you'll come along and help out!

Here is the most recent email from Their Excellencies, Baron Quinn & Baroness Vivienne on the Event/Demo:

Well, we are coming down to the wire for the demo this Saturday at the Galleria Mall in Johnstown.

Friday evening after 3 pm we will be setting up the list field and the pavilions in which we will be displaying all the items we can muster to interest our audience in our organization and, hopefully, swell the membership of our Barony.

There will be a porta castle available for SCA member use only throughout the day. (It's a bit of a walk to get into the mall proper from our site and the closest indoor bathrooms are down the hall from the food court next to Boscovs.)

Saturday morning we need to arrive at the site early to set up the inside and outside displays, say around 8 am. The mall does not open until 10 am and we will have our first procession through the mall at 10:30 to stir up interest for the Fencing Tourney which will follow at around 11 or 11:15 am. We will need "several" of you to don the Baronial Guard Tabards, hoist a sharp-pointed-hicky-thingy, and accompany us. Anyone else who wishes to join us will be welcome as well. The mall has agreed to make announcements for us over their intercom system regarding the times when we will be holding the other Tournaments and our final, formal court later in the day.

As it now stands, Fencing will commence, as mentioned above, at 11 or 11:15 am. There will be a short court following each tourney where we will award the new champion his scroll and accoutrements of his new position. (This is so the audience present at the time can get an idea of how a court is run.) The Heavy Weapons Tourney will be around 1 pm, Thrown Weapons Tourney at 3 pm, Combat Archery Tourney at 5 pm, and our formal, closing court at 7 pm in which we will again present our champions with the scrolls/etc., that they got during the earlier, shorter courts that followed each tourney. There will also be some other Baronial business handled during this court. We will be processing the mall prior to the final, formal court around 6 or 6:15 pm.

Demonstrations of heraldry, calligraphy & illumination, costuming, Sekanjabin, gingerbread, and pretzels, card weaving, lucet work, wire weaving, ancient coins, music, as well as dancing, thrown weapons, and a calibration exercise will be presented concurrently throughout the day at miscellaneous times depending on the interests of our audience. There will be hands-on opportunities for people to try the card weaving, wire weaving, lucet work, and calligraphy. Inviting people to join our dancing (the wench toss) is always popular. As of this writing, it is possible that our War Trebuchet will also be available for demonstrations during the day.

The Thrown Weapons range and Calibration Exercise will be open to the public as long as they sign a waiver to participate, get their hand stamped at Connor's pavilion, and follow the rules as presented by the marshals in charge of these two areas, Lord Kenn and Lord Connor.

Our inside display will consist of a table which will hold our TV/VCR/DVD playing the Pennsic War continuously and some small A&S items to garner interest. We will need volunteers to man this area inside the mall on a rotational shift basis (1 to 2 hrs). At least two people should be there at all times to answer questions and direct the public to our outside site below the mall's Food Court exit.

Handouts consist of Business cards containing the Baronial device and our website address which we will have available to the public in the pavilions outside. For anyone who actually signs our book for more information, we will be giving them a copy of Forward Into the Past as introduction to the SCA. Mistress Cynthia has arranged (with gracious assistance and permission from our Canton members, Otto and Elena) to provide both samples of Sekanjabin and a medieval gingerbread for the audience, and has small handouts with the recipes on one side and activities we currently hold throughout the week on the other.

We would remind everyone to dress in the best they have available, be prepared to interact with the public in as courteous a manner as possible, and come have fun with your fellow Boggers as we present the Current Middle Ages to the modern world.

A post revel hosted by Lady Katya and Lord Kenn at their home, will follow clean up which will occur after our 7 pm court. They will have driving directions available for those who need them.

We are looking forward to a great day being with our Bogger family and choosing our next Baronial Champions.

Thanks in advance to everyone,

Quinn & Viviennedragonwriterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12715131525543931315noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9003864140434005556.post-5225028093134942632008-07-04T23:48:00.005-04:002008-07-05T00:17:53.660-04:00Having fun at the demoHappy 4th of July everyone!

Friday was my first day at the Twin Lakes Demo, and we had a great time.

We made new friends... spread the word on the SCA and living the dream... and enjoyed cooler humid weather than we normally get for this weekend. Plus for several hours in a row, it did NOT rain!

If you're available, we hope you'll come join us as we still have Saturday and Sunday to demonstrate the things we love about the SCA. We may have even turned a Civil War re-enactor or two to our side. (No re-enactors were harmed in the making of that photo.)

Even if you don't feel like sitting in the demonstration area, we invite you to wear your garb and stroll through the craft/entertainment/food areas... just direct any curious people to the upper lake.

Check back when the demo is over for a summary of how things went and to see more photos.

YIS,
Caitidragonwriterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12715131525543931315noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9003864140434005556.post-22779204717198241452008-06-30T13:24:00.004-04:002008-06-30T13:45:51.388-04:00Twin Lakes Demo!Howdy Y'all!

Well, it's here on Thursday...

The annual Westmoreland Arts & Heritage feastival ant Twin Lakes Park outside of Greensburg.

Directions:
http://www.artsandheritage.com/directions.htm

Here's "the Good, the Bad, & the Ugly".

This year we were able to get five parking passes, so once again we will be recycling them like nothing else. We're in Lot B, the cozy one. Please contact me if you need a pass, and please don't be insulted when I go "Why?". We have quite a few guests coming from outside of our area and we need to amke sure that everyone has a chance to drop items off. OK, that was the "Bad" part.

I will be starting to set up Wednesday evening after work (5:30ish). The nice people running the feastival asked that we not continue to set up after dark, as it makes the security squirrels uneasy and much more prone to violence. Nasty wounds, those bite marks! Anyone wanting to swing by and lend a hand,... well, I am giving out sainthoods. (Goes with the crusader persona!)

Anyone with items to display, and are willing to have those items at the event throughout the weekend please contact me and I'll either arrange to pick them up or be ready to receive them. Come on, I'm offering sainthood here!

We'll be ready to go at 10:30 am on Thursday and will go until 8:00 pm each evening. Basically 'til around sunset. We'll probably toss dogs and/or burgers on the grill in the evening around close and all are welcome. Sunday evening is the break down, and once again, sainthood will be given freely... The mundane persona has to get up at 5:30 am.

This is going to be a fun event (see there IS a Good). We'll meet a lot of people and have a good time. I'll be in armor for the first time in around 15 years, so slap-stick (or slap-Otto) will be rampant. Oh yeah, that's the Ugly part...

Seriously, I want to thank everyone in advance for all of the help and assistance.

IS

Otto the Giver of SainthoodsLeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07717389705972658308noreply@blogger.com2
